How to decide which window type is best for you
Deciding what material your windows should be made out of is something that often gets overlooked when thinking of replacing your windows. But what material should you use? The answer isn't as simple as you might hope. There's many factors that go into which material you decide to choose such as the style your trying to achieve, the existing window, and most importantly your budget. With these considerations in mind you can narrow down which type is right for you. Take a look at a few of the most common materials that windows are made out of
Window Styles
Whether wood or vinyl, these are the most common window styles
Double Hung
A double hung window consists of 2 separate sashes that slide up and down. Most newer windows will tilt-in to allow the exterior of the windows to be cleaned from the inside.
Single Hung
A single hung window looks very similar to a double hung with 2 sashes, but the top sash is stationary, and only the lower sash slides up and down. Not all manufacturers make a single hung window though
Casement
A casement window has one sash that is hinged on either side of the window and opens outwards. A handle is typically spun near the bottom of the window for opening.
Picture
A picture window is a stationary window that can either sit on its own, or be mulled (connected) together with other styles to create a larger window for larger openings.
Slider
A typical slider window contains sashes that slide from left to right and lock in the center. They can have multiple configurations such as 2 sashes where either one or both sides slide, or for bigger applications, there are 3 lite sliders where either end will slide with the center remaining stationary
Bay and bow windows
A bay window and a bow window are two entirely different designs that protrude out from the house but they are often confused with each other. A bow window typically has 4 or more windows connected together to form a rounded shape. A bay window will have 3 windows put together, 1 picture window in the center and either a double hung or casement on each side. This creates much sharper angles that a bow window.
Awning
An awning window is a single sash that is hinged at the top of the window and opens out. This window can commonly be found in basements or other areas where there is limited space outside of the window.
Hopper
A hopper window is another window typically located in basements. This window is hinged on the bottom and opens inward allowing a screen to be installed on the exterior so air can be let in
Specialty Shapes
Any window that isn't a square or rectangle would fall into this category. This could be an octagon, a trapezoid, a circle, or a half circle.
Glass Block
Glass block windows are commonly found in bathrooms and basements. These windows are made of different size translucent blocks of glass that allow light to shine through while limiting what you can see through it to shadows. When installed properly and mortared in these windows tend to provide the greatest security due to its thicker glass and smaller sized openings.
